As per AS2293, all commercial and public buildings must have an emergency lighting system designed, installed, and maintained to specific standards. These standards ensure that people can safely evacuate a building in the event of an emergency.

The requirements for emergency lighting systems vary depending on the type of building, but all systems must be tested and discharged at six-monthly and annual intervals. In addition, exit signage and emergency lighting must remain illuminated for a minimum of 90 minutes in the event of an emergency.
